Christmas in…Summer?

This is Christmas in Buenos Aires

Well, this year I celebrated my first southern hemisphere Christmas- and I was wearing a t-shirt.

Being from California, its not exactly as if I´m accustomed to the blistering cold December that many other places in the states regularly experience, but this was a completely different story. As the 25th of December approached and decorated Christmas trees started popping up all over the city, my mind was having a very difficult time connecting the holiday, which I have always linked with winter break, with the humid, thick summer air that is so characterstic of the BA “verano”. Then, when Christmas Eve rolled around- a normally quiet, intimate, preparatory part of the holiday as celebrated in the states- I was more than surprised to learn that not only was it the most significant part of Christmas here but, when the clock strikes midnight, also begins a very New Years Eve-like celebration, complete with fireworks, yelling and dancing, and a whole lot of “festive” drinking.

Ale

My name is Alejandra and I’m a 25 - almost 26 years old entrepreneur. Yeah, young people can also be responsible and run a business, in fact I’m the oldest of Stay in Buenos Aires’s team! I’m of Dutch and Colombian decent, and I’ve lived in Argentina since I was four years old.

Here is a short story of how I started Stay in Buenos Aires:

Year ending celebration at Obelisco

Daniel Barenboim will perform “Tangos Sinfónicos” with the Filarmonic Orchestra of Buenos Aires at the Obelisco celebrating the end of 2006.
This world famous argentinean pianist and director is returning to BA on the last day of the year for this show, and he will be directing some Tango exits such as “La Comparsita”, “El Día que me quieras”, “Adiós nonino”; and asking, as in his previous performances, for peace in Middle-East.

So relax and enjoy this high quality music season before getting anxious for the New Year.

Buen Dia in Buenos Aires

One of the early summer highlights here in Buenos Aires is the Buen Dia Festival- a half day of live music, street vending, food and fun in Palermo starting at 12pm, ending at midnight. There are 13 artists scheduled to play 30-60 min sets- a great way to get to know a variety of local Argentinean music in one dose. My personal recommendation is not to miss Doris at 19:00, and my colleague Paul says be sure to check out Placer at 16:00… but to each his own, so maybe you should just spend the whole day there, as we are planning to do. For all the specific info visit http://www.festivalbuendia.net/. Don’t forget sunscreen and water! Enjoy! -The Yankee
