5th International Biennial of Textile Arts, Buenos Aires

The 5th International Biennial of Textile Art will be held from April 1st to 25th, 2009 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Palais de Glace, organized by the World Textile Art Organization (WTA). The 5th International Biennial of Textile Art places its attention on those artists who choose to express themselves through fibers and weaving, resignifying through their work the concept of Textile Art, by taking away all boundaries and making it explode into many meanings and connotations.

Overstepping boundaries and combining different disciplines, those artists participating in the 5th International Biennial of Textile Art start from the mere fibers to merge into new technologies, venturing to follow new lines of investigation, fusing their quests and challenging categorizations but keeping the soul of textile materials as the integrating element.

Alejandro Sirio (1890-1953), was born in Oviedo, Spain, under the name of Nicanor Alvarez Díaz. Before he was 20 years old, he moved to Buenos Aires, where his artistic skills were discovered by the creators of the Caras y Caretas magazine. His works were published in the magazine, in La Nación newspaper and El Hogar magazine. They revolved mostly around Argentinian history. In addition to being a great artist, Alejandro Sirio was a professor at the Fine Arts National School.

Buen Dia in Buenos Aires

One of the early summer highlights here in Buenos Aires is the Buen Dia Festival- a half day of live music, street vending, food and fun in Palermo starting at 12pm, ending at midnight. There are 13 artists scheduled to play 30-60 min sets- a great way to get to know a variety of local Argentinean music in one dose. My personal recommendation is not to miss Doris at 19:00, and my colleague Paul says be sure to check out Placer at 16:00… but to each his own, so maybe you should just spend the whole day there, as we are planning to do. For all the specific info visit http://www.festivalbuendia.net/. Don’t forget sunscreen and water! Enjoy! -The Yankee
