Another day off at Monday the 13th of October!

 An official non-working day

The celebration of the day that Columbus Colon “discovered” America, officially the 12th of October, celebrated to union all the people who share the same language, origin or religion.

“Non touristic neighborhoods” part one: BARRACAS

If you want to get known with the “real” Buenos Aires and not only the touristic and the so popular parts of the city - which of course also got there charm- we suggest that you to take once in a while a day to walk around in a few neighborhoods that we will describe during some time, to see if you can get to the smell of the river, the rhytm of the (european) imigrants influence and the real feeling of tango..

BARRACAS

1. Martín García Avenue
It was the old route called Camino a la Ensenada de Barragan to Magdalena and Quilmes towns, originally sourcing from Plaza Mayor. The carts exit the port down Defensa and Humberto I streets. The nearby Almirante Brown avenue leads you to La Boca neighborhood.

2. Canale Factory
Martín García avenue opposite to Lezama Park

The famous and old cookies factory used to sweetly scent the whole neighborhood. Premises hold two domes and it has been decorated with majolica.

3. Avenida Martín García 584
This was the seat of Admiral Brown’s week-end cottage. Guillermo Brown, mariner of Irish origin, created the First Argentine Navy Fleet.

Make your own Argentine barbecue (ASADO) in your apartment

To stay in Argentina has one obligation….asado!…because the Argentine meat is known as the best meat in the world! Of course there is the possibility to eat in one of the many excellent restaurants with a parrilla (the name of the grill) in Buenos Aires, but maybe you have rented an apartment with us with a parrilla. Most of the time you will find the parrilla at the terrace of the building which is for general use of the people who live there. The rules are simple: use the parrilla and leave it behind as you found it.

Asado

O.k., first you have to know what meat you can place on the parrilla. The meat has a typical cut here in Argentina, so we have to give you a shopping list for the butcher:

“Tira de asado” and “vacio”(cow), bondiola ( pig), morcilla and chorizo (sausages) and maybe you like  chinchulín.

The classical Argentine “asado” comes with a mixed salad as the side dish ( lettuce, tomatos and onions) and of course a lot of bread. Then also the “chimichurri” should be on the table, a mix of oil and  vinegar with garlic, cayenne pepper, oregano, salt, paprika powder….just give it your taste.

Don’t forget to buy charcoal to make the fire !

And now you should prepare the fire, take your time, watch out for the cooking points of the meat (rare doesn’t exist here, the list is “jugoso, al punto and cocido”  which will be “medium, medium/done and well done”).

Enjoy it with good company.

Bon apetite!

Happy springtime!

Spring has arrived and we wish you a happy springtime stay in Buenos Aires !

………if we can not reach you…….

Since this week when we go to the office there is a huge question running around in our heads…..DO WE HAVE INTERNET CONNECTION TODAY?

This makes us realize that, unless all the good will and mood we have to work, it is givin’ some ISSUE OF CONCERNS…because we are pretty depending on the internet connection.

So…if you can not reach us, or rather, if we can not reach you, don’t worry, we are working with full forces to reach a solution and you will receive a -probably delayed- reaction.

The only computer that is most of the time connected has the following skype:

sandra-stayinba

We hope that you understand our situation.

Dog walker, a common sight in Buenos Aires

This is a typical street image in Buenos Aires.

Walking in a group is for dogs very natural, a must is that the dogwalker is a natural leader and has a special effection for dogs, is fiscally able to handle little problems in the group and leads them (mostly by voice) safely through town. Don’t be suprised of the size of the group of dogs, it can be be up to 20….it’s a job!

The dog-walker starts in the morning to collect his first dog and this is the lucky one, most of the time it will be the last to deliver after about 4 hours outside, before the dog-walker goes home. In this 4 hours working day, he or she is collecting the rest of the dogs, whom mostly are very happy to get out and meet their friend-dogs and go to the park to play a game or have a chat or just sit in the sun next to a tree.

“You are livin’ like a dog ” doesn’t seems to be an awful life…

About the banks and ATM in Buenos Aires

When the first ATM was introduced (see photo) there was an excitement about the idea of the unlimited withdraw of cash, of course depending on the amount present at your account. Nowadays the ATM’s in Buenos Aires are not so generous anymore, unless the balance at your account. Of course there are thousands or maybe millions ATM’s in our Capital Federal, but the chance to take out dollars is not so big, to say, just a few machines are giving dollars.

Also the amount of pesos to withdraw has it’s daily limit. About 500 until 1000 pesos is the machine willing to give you, but after that it applies to your creativity and patience, maybe you have an other card or you just wait until tomorrow…..anyway there is no use to get angry or make a claim at your bank, this only will cost you time and won’t give any results.

Just be prepared and if you are traveling a lot, inform the bank a few days in advance in which country you are going to use the ATM, so they know it is not a robbed card traveling from country to country, but it’s YOU, using your card and traveling from country to country!

So, to quote the words of Jason, an appreciated visitor of Stay in Buenos Aires…the bank knows better where you are hanging out than your mother!

The storm of Santa Rosa

Usually at the end of August the storm of Santa Rosa is announced. This fight of the cold and hot air is taken serious and the wind that will rule Buenos Aires will make us conscience of the fact that man doesn’t rule nature. In the same time, the Santa Rosa storm announces a change of season so just hang on and spring will come soon!

The official sales launch of the Apple iPhone 3G in Argentina has begun.

Apple iPhone 3GRelatively unspectacular, officially the sales of Apples iPhone 3G has begun.
Since the prices were a bit higher than in the U.S., it is only interesting for a upper salary class .

At the moment, telephone companies such as Claro and Movistar offers the iPhone in different cities (Buenos Aires, San Miguel de Tucman) of Argentina.

A offer of Claro for example is  119 pesos each month for a 18 months contract period and 1600 pesos for the Apple iPhone itself.
