Buenos Aires Night Life

Buenos Aires nightlife is world-wide recognized like one of the most entertaining and exotic. It is known for its enormous amount of options that offer so much for the tourists as for the residents. One of the unique characteristics different of other cities of the world is that people will be able to find nighttime activities any day of the week.

Palermo is very popular with a fashionable crowd, specially the areas of Las Cañitas and Palermo Hollywood, with trendy bars, clubs and restaurants.
The streets surounding La Recoleta Cemetery are also good places to go out, specially during the weekends when the pavement bars and cafes remain busy until the action moves to the nearby clubs. A number of drinking options, including English and Irish pubs, exist on and around “Calle Reconquista” and “Avenida 25 de Mayo”, while San Telmo is a focal point for Bohemian bars and tango shows.

“Puerto Madero” the newest district of Buenos Aires, is bordering the river and because of the wide supply of gastronomy has become a very popular site to have dinner and to enjoy different drinks.

Argentina Gay Pride Parade 2008

Buenos Aires is the most liberal city in Latin America. As an example, two years ago, it was legalised the same-sex civil unions. Marcela Cuesta, Buenos Aires’s sub secretary of tourism, said: “We’re quite an open society, with open criteria to accept visitors. That’s what we’ve been showing and that’s why gay tourism has nominated us as a gay-friendly city.”
In November, Buenos Aires’ annual gay pride parade attracted thousands of men and women to celebrate the birth of the first gay organization in Latin America. The parade starts in Plaza de Mayo, downtown Buenos Aires, Saturday 1rst of November at 18:00 PM, goes over Avenida de Mayo and ends in front of the Congress Palace.

“Non touristic neighborhoods” part one: BARRACAS

If you want to get known with the “real” Buenos Aires and not only the touristic and the so popular parts of the city - which of course also got there charm- we suggest that you to take once in a while a day to walk around in a few neighborhoods that we will describe during some time, to see if you can get to the smell of the river, the rhytm of the (european) imigrants influence and the real feeling of tango..

BARRACAS

1. Martín García Avenue
It was the old route called Camino a la Ensenada de Barragan to Magdalena and Quilmes towns, originally sourcing from Plaza Mayor. The carts exit the port down Defensa and Humberto I streets. The nearby Almirante Brown avenue leads you to La Boca neighborhood.

2. Canale Factory
Martín García avenue opposite to Lezama Park

The famous and old cookies factory used to sweetly scent the whole neighborhood. Premises hold two domes and it has been decorated with majolica.

3. Avenida Martín García 584

As for the third show the tickets were sold out in a few hours, the ” world wide money crisis” is taken very seriously……… tickets offered by internet have the “Sticky” price of € 271 and up…till € 6.700!

15th birthday celebration.

When you are visiting Buenos Aires, you also will pass by some public places like restaurants or clubs where there is obviously a birthday party going on.  Something which is so common all over the world,  but in the same time a reflexion of culture, very interesting to observe if you want to know a bit more about the country you are moving around at that moment.

I just wanted to tell you something about the most important birthday for the young women, honestly I don’t know if this 15th birthday is celebrated only in South America, but for European citizans for sure it is unknown.

The 15th birthday of a girl is, like mentioned above, the most important one and is celebrated like a wedding, but without any husband involved. The 15th birthday is a symbol for the change of a girl to a young women. The young women is dressed in a long white dress and she carries  flowers. There will be taken photos, a special 15th birthday cake, dancing in a “salon” with the company of the family and friends and she will shine and enjoy to be the center of attention at the most important birthday of her life.

Dog walker, a common sight in Buenos Aires

This is a typical street image in Buenos Aires.

Walking in a group is for dogs very natural, a must is that the dogwalker is a natural leader and has a special effection for dogs, is fiscally able to handle little problems in the group and leads them (mostly by voice) safely through town. Don’t be suprised of the size of the group of dogs, it can be be up to 20….it’s a job!

The dog-walker starts in the morning to collect his first dog and this is the lucky one, most of the time it will be the last to deliver after about 4 hours outside, before the dog-walker goes home. In this 4 hours working day, he or she is collecting the rest of the dogs, whom mostly are very happy to get out and meet their friend-dogs and go to the park to play a game or have a chat or just sit in the sun next to a tree.

“You are livin’ like a dog ” doesn’t seems to be an awful life…

Pizza, one of the most popular foods in Buenos Aires, and they are great!

If you just want to eat something that seems to be common, but which is worth while to eat here in Buenos Aires, start to think about the pizza. It sounds crazy, but in the period that all Buenos Aires was invaded by Italian immigrants, the pizza made it’s name. And to be honest, it is an awful fact that they are so bad according to the fat percentage and that they are so dammed tasty, nice, delicious and therefor so hard to ignore.

Here I can give you some names of the most famous restaurants to eat pizza, but I can assure you that if you ask to a Porteño where you can eat the best pizza in town, you will be in the middle of a discussion which starts between you and him or her and ends with a great amount of Porteños whom will all know the best, oldest, most historical and they are all in different places.

So just try it yourself and have fun!

Tip: you can eat your pizza with a faina and drink it with a moscato, a sweet white wine. Also it is a great adventure to eat one portion of each pizza. Just see for yourself, this pizzas are GREAT according to us from Stay in Buenos Aires and the restaurants are historical.

Taxi in Buenos Aires!

To move in Buenos Aires with a taxi is another common and of course more comfortable way of transfer. The taxi is relatively cheap, and almost all have a taximeter, which will be set at 3,80 pesos to begin. Most of the taxi’s you just stop in the street.

When you see the red light of the sign in the taxi “libre” it says that the taxi is free. Put up your hand and they will stop.

Free

To enjoy your ride, just sit back and relax, it’s better if you’re not in a hurry with the traffic here in Buenos Aires.

Tip: pay with small bills…..
